Formula 1 2009 (Wii) July 19, 2010 Katherine My 10 year old son loves this game. It takes a little time to get used to the controls but it is good value for money.
Vag's review July 7, 2010 Vagman I've driven quite a lot of games with cars, using a steering wheel.
Feedback is ok, the tracks, sound and graphics are nice, but controlling the acceleration and braking with the gearshift paddles is a pain.
it's not an issue of the game, but it affects the overall satisfaction.
Very Good - But not easy (for me) at first June 17, 2010 Warleybear (UK) I'm not normally into race games - but I really enjoyed this one. There may be 'purists' who find fault - but if you want an F1 game this isnt bad at all. I did find it difficult to control the car at first (whether with a wheel or the remote and chuck) - but as I improved bit by bit I felt a sense of achievement. Perhaps its a plus that its not too easy once you strip out the assist functions? There probably will be improvements to this game - but for me it had what I wanted and has become highly adictive :-) A great game for the WII.
f1 on the wii....bring it on! May 29, 2010 Mr. D. R. Mees (Uk) great product, played similar on ps2, 2 diff seasons and this is better. hard at first to get used to response from controller but good graphics and lots of challenges as well as the standard racing. love the emails messages you get when you win in 'career' mode, would strongly recommend. would like an online play option to play against friends online if it were possible, like mario karts, but don't know if it's too detailed, maybe will introduce that later?
Good, but with a few flaws! May 24, 2010 Vega31 (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First off, I'll be clear; I really enjoy playing this game. However as a gamer and motor racing fan there are a few let downs which many people seem to overlook. Some are big, some are not so big, but on the whole don't detract from the excellent playability and depth.
I'll get the non-realistic problems done first which, as an F1 fan are frustrating! Qualifying three and race tires aren't consistent, you can finish Q3 on slicks, then start the race on the harder compound. Weather changes too quickly, you can have dry Q1, pouring down Q2, bone dry Q3, which is strange. Pit stop strategy must be chosen before Q3 and cannot be changed thereafter. Fine if it's dry, but if the race is wet you can easily do a one stopper without too much tire degradation but as qualifying was dry, you chose the faster two stop option and you're stuck with it and all you can do is watch the AI drivers whizz off with 30 seconds in hand. Pit stops also take far too long, I've waited stationary for 16 seconds before for tyres and fuel, never have I seen a stop under ten seconds, which is at odds with the 7-10 seconds as taken in the refueling era. Also flags, the bain of the game! You'll get black and white flagged for AI drivers turning into you when you've rightly taken a place, or if they run off the track and come back on to the track into you etc. This will drive you mad with the strictest flag settings. As will back markers who don't appear to move out of the way when blue flagged, instead they hold their position and run you off on bends, which is annoying in Shanghai. This results in the front wing coming off and your car being un-drivable which will lead you to encounter a new problem as you pit to repair. Your stop is scheduled for lap 22, it's lap 21 now. You'd think Codemasters (given the apparently arrogant name!) would realise this and combine scheduled tyres and fuel with damage repair, but no. So now you have two laps, with two impossibly long stops. This didn't occur in 1998 when pitting as VideoSystem (less arrogantly named) included sliders as the car went onto autopilot for you to choose how much fuel you wanted adding and what tyres you wanted putting on, if any. Still, at least you have KERS to allow you to catch up it seems. KERS has two main problems, every car has it, as opposed to only Ferrari and McLarens, which is clearly an attempt to level the playing field so everyone has it, although the AI never seems to use it. The sound effect for KERS is horrible as well, like a malfunctioning turbo with a bad chest.
The game also features a lot of repetition. I know this sounds odd as you've bought a game to do a lap of a circuit 70 times, but your "race engineer" radio chap only has about four things to say, some variation would be nice. This happy chappy is also useless when it comes to telling you anything useful. The on screen split timer only shows gaps back to around 15 seconds and all you're told via the radio is "you're building a good lead". This isn't normally a problem however when it's wet and your strategy is all wrong you can be pushing too hard for no reason or not pushing enough in a vain attempt to stay front forward. In career mode it gets even worse, all the mails you receive are pretty much the same just with the location changed. This might seem petty, but given how much you'll want to play this game it'll drive you so far up the wall you're be hard pressed against the ceiling.
Anyway, moving swiftly on to the good things, which are plentiful. The game plays well, with many options. The cars handle as you want them too, and if you know your technical stuff you can really go to town with tuning and get your car exactly as you like it. If you are mechanically minded this is great as it really adds depth, not only can you learn tracks better, you can really feel like you had a part in doing it. If you're not mechanically minded you can can just use the defaults which work well enough to take you all the way through the game. Driving aids are there for complete beginners which work well, I've watched an older family member start with them all on, taking one off at a time a competent level has been attained in only weeks so they're certainly effective which is nice to know, and you don't have to worry about not being used to computer games!
Numerous game modes make this game stand out above other serious racing games. Challenges are great, such as setting a fast lap, overtaking as many cars as possible in one lap, slip streaming for points, taking bends as fast as possible to get points, seeing how many check points you can get through before the timer runs out (remember when all racing games were like that?!) and finishing as high up as possible. Your performance is graded after, adding replay value if you don't get an A. Longevity is also added by awards, such as winning around the tight streets of Monaco with the damage turned on, getting over 144 points (think Schumacher '04) etc which are fun to get.
Graphics are good for the Wii, some scenery is a bit bland, but you're watching the track though right? Sound is sparse but what there is sounds great, apart from that bloody race engineer and the horrible KERS sound (so bad I've mentioned it twice)! Control is either using a "wheel" style or with the stick on the nun chuck with a few button combinations.
All in all though, this is a very enjoyable game to play, highly recommended for F1 fans and racing game fans alike. It can be technical if you want, or a user friendly arcade style racer, you decide!
