Amazon.co.uk Review
Welcome to the world of Pokémon, one filled with wild Pokémon and the people who attempt to tame them. You are Ash Ketchum, a boy on a quest to become the best Pokémon trainer in the world. Professor Oak, the leading authority on Pokémon, has given you your choice of three tame Pokémon in exchange for your helping him to catalogue and document every Pokémon in the world.

But to catalogue a Pokémon, you have to capture it, by first beating it up with one of your trained Pokémon, and then hitting it with an empty Pokémon Ball. As your tame Pokémon gain experience in battle, their abilities improve and they earn access to new attacks. Sometimes they even evolve into more advanced Pokémon.

Aside from capturing wild Pokémon and evolving your own, you can catalogue new Pokémon--the only way to gather some Pokémon--by trading with another Pokémon player using either a link cable or the Game Boy Color's infrared system. Pokémon gained through trades learn and evolve faster, and trading is the only way to capture all 151 Pokémon, since each Pokémon game (Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, andPokémon Yellow) has certain Pokémon missing. So if you own Red and want to have a complete set of Pokémon, you must find a friendly Blue or Yellow owner and arrange a trade.

Pokémon Red is packed with interesting characters, an ingenious story book, intriguing strategy, and of course plenty of cute Pokémon, and it's easy to see how it started the Pokeémania that is sweeping the world. --Michael Fehlauer

    Pros:
  • Gameplay and strategy that are fun for all ages
  • Fantastic replay value
  • Brilliant game design encourages players to meet and trade
    Cons:
  • Hours of looking at the Game Boy's little screen may hurt neck
  • Only 1 saved game per cartridge--2 people can't share a single game
  • No difference between Red and Blue except for distribution of Pokémon

5 out of 5 stars great game   May 12, 2010
Mr. R. R. Morrison
a timeless masterpiece that is as much fun to play now as it was years ago when it first came out

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Pokemon Red   February 5, 2010

I bought this game for my son, and he won't put it down. If you are into Pokemon this is a must. It may be an older game, but the game play hasn't change much, so you won't get that "retro" feeling playing it.

3 out of 5 stars Surpriaingly hard for me!   August 24, 2009

I own a Gameboy Color. If that's not nerdy enough for you, the only game I have for it is Pokemon Red. (I daren't buy a second hand GSC because of this stupid internal battery lark.) I bought PR from a friend for £10. I switched on the handheld, and the game began...

If you've never played Pokemon before, it's a turned based battle RPG, where you catch monsters by throwing a ball that shrinks them so they fit in your pocket. (Hence the name Pocket Monsters.) You then raise them and as they fight more they gain experience which causes them to "level up" at a certain point. When a Pokemon levels up their Stats (Statistics) enhance and they might learn a new move to use in battle. As you travel through the land you encounter Gym Leaders, strong Pokemon Trainers, who, if you beat them, will give you a badge. (Think of them as bosses.) When you get 8 badges you can challenge the Champion. I have to admit reading this through makes me realize how stupid the concept is!

Let's start on graphics and music, I'll go into gameplay later on. The graphics are hard to see, and very "pixelly" as expected. But hey, this the DS of the '90s, what do you expect? The music for the towns and routes is annoying, but boy! The battle music! It really is amazing for the era! Honestly, I spent the majority of my fight with the first Gym Leader with the speaker to my ear! (Call me a nerd, I just like it!) The trainer battle music is also great, but since it's so repetitive, you'll quickly start to get bored of it and just ignore it.

Okay, now for the unfavourable. This game is hard! I've never had difficulty problems with Pokemon games before, once I beat the first Gym, my Pokemon were underleveled. (Meaning they were too weak.) So this made the game hard!

Even though the game is hard by my standards, I strongly recommend this game, but only because, these days, it's so cheap. Even if you don't normally play the franchise, give this game a try! If you haven't played a Pokemon RPG game that isn't Pokemon XD, you've seen nothing in the world of video games!

4 out of 5 stars pokemon red   June 1, 2009

this game is a true clasic despite the crummy graphics which are defenitly the worst thing about the game and how there is only one colour in the entire game Wich is red also how short the story line is.Despite this there is hours of fun catching and raising diffrent pokemon if you still love the series and never tried this game or just a gamer who is curious I would give this game a great recamondation overall i would give it 90% if the graphics had been better as they are in yellow version i would have given it 95%
