2 out of 5 stars Unfinished, unforgiveable!   July 2, 2010
Portly Bill (UK)
I don't do multi-player so this review only covers my single player experience:

What a real shame, The developers saw the behemoth that was Modern Warfare 2 looming on the horizon, panicked and thought it more important to "get the drop" on them than it was to release a game that was one, bug free and two (and most crucially) finished!

The games core gameplay mechanic is wildly different to Modern Warfare. It therefore caters for different mindsets / markets. Modern Warfare is a tour de force of set pieces that is second to none where as this game is an unforgiving and tense war simulation where you could die at any moment. Many fans of Modern Warfare are never going to take to this game (unless they know what sort of game they are buying).

Cons:
1. Each mission does not allow you to choose weapon load-outs or team to suit what strategy you want to follow;
2. It has a woefully laborous command interface that more often than not gets you killed whilst you try and get your team to "follow me"
3. Team AI is flaky and unreliable and deserves a seperate review on its limitations
4. It takes one shot to kill/incapacitate you but oftentimes three or four to down an enemy. If you wing someone, they just carry on as if nothing has happened.
5.You may remember Operation Flashpoint 1 (from 2001!) where it looked like the soldiers were floating along whilst running, they still do that here.
6. The death animations are one dimensional. Shoot someone with a 50cal and they slump like a bag of potatoes. Shoot them with a 9mm pistol and they slump like a bag of potatoes. Blow them up with a grenade and yes, they slump like a bag of potatoes.
7. Graphically pretty on first impressions but on closer inspection not up to the best standards of today, by a long way.

...I could go on... for example I haven't even mentioned the bugs, one of which is sometimes when you shoot an enemy they just freeze as if you've got them with a freeze ray. Also, more than once the downed enemy started to spasm as if an alien was about to burst from them a'la Deadspace. Sloppy.

Pros.
1. The tension in advancing under enemy fire in the midst of a firefight whilst managing to dispatch the enemy one by one is a lot of fun
2. When the command interface works, when your AI team does what they are told, is a lot of fun
3. This game is peversely a lot of fun. I finished it so despite all the cons above and if you can get on the cheap then unbelievably I would recommend it!

My huge disappointment stems from the fact that, given time, the game could have so much better. It would never have matched the more accessible Modern Warfare juggernaut, and should not have tried. If they had given themselves another 6-12 months then my con list may have been much shorter.

The people who rushed this game out really should hang their heads in shame because they really missed a trick here.

This game is very bad, I bought it at the same time I got a CoD Game and this is nothing compaired to it. It is not worth the money I don't feel myself coming back to play multiplayer or storymode again..

5 out of 5 stars Ignore The COD Fanboys   May 29, 2010
Mr. Matthew D. Rose (UK)

I know that this product has an overall review of 3/5 stars. When it comes down to it, the bad reviews are from people who bought this without reading the description- they were expecting checkpoints every five seconds, run and gun gameplay and the ability to withstand bullet after bullet. In short, COD fanboys.

Now, when I first bought this game, I had a tiny TV- 25 inches. And I have to say, if you have a small TV, don't buy it. Because it is such an open world, you simply won't be able to see the enemy unless you sit a meter away from the screen. However, I recently got a 37 inch HD TV, and oh my god, is it so much better. In HD, the graphics are unbelievable.

Gameplay wise, yes, it is a combat simulator. This means, if you stand up straight and run through a field, you will be shot and killed. It can only take one bullet, depending on where it hits you. You might get lucky and only get shot in the arm, but then you'll find that unless your medic does some work for you, you can't aim properly.

So you have to think tactically. Its very satisfying in places- for example, in one mission, if all goes to plan, you lead a four man Spec- Ops team, you put them in a tight wedge, tell them to hold their fire, sneak into an enemy fuel depot, slot some enemies providing they won't be seen, plant some C4 on the objective, exfil, move to the extraction zone, detonate the C4, watch them run about like headless chickens and get on your helicopter and go.

One thing that did disappoint me though was lack of customisation. You cannot change what weapons your character takes into each mission with you, and there is not much choice to pick up during the mission. The first mission has an M82A1 and Javelin, but after that its just crappy Chinese guns. Vehicle wise, on Xbox, without glitching, there is no way to fly a Cobra :(. But you can drive Humvees, fly Blackhawks, command Abrams, so its not all gloomy.

There are three difficulty modes- Normal, Experienced and Hardcore. Rather than the enemy getting more accurate, increasing difficulty lowers the number of checkpoints and HUD elements, until Hardcore, where if you die you restart the mission, and has no HUD at all.

I've written too much- I could go on for ages. In short, if you want to try something completely different from your average console shooter buy it- its really cheap now anyway!

1 out of 5 stars Looks good, but REALY isn't.   May 7, 2010

I was looking forward to this game because it sounded and looked great, especially from the trailer. Shame I couldn't get my hands on a demo before I bought it, because its terrible. No demo on PS3 or 360 probably because the game is so bad and they dont want you to play it so you dont buy it after playing. Look dont get me wrong 5 years ago this would have been a good game, graphically this game strugles to be as good as some old PS2 game. For that reason alone it is not worth buying, we spend a lot of money on our powerful games consoles I expect very good graphics ie; COD MODERN WARFARE BOTH. I have never bougt a game and not played it through before until now.
